Welcome to China! Welcome to Xuzhou!
| |
China is the world’s biggest producer of sweetpotato, with a long and rich heritage in sweetpotato research, development, and collaboration with international researchers and organizations worldwide. This symposium welcomes sweetpotato scientists from all over the globe to share the latest sweetpotato science and advances that can help address growing food security and energy sustainability needs. |
The Symposium and Workshop
| |
The Xuzhou Academy of Agricultural Sciences (XAAS) – also known as the Jiangsu Xuzhou Sweetpotato Research Centre, Jiangsu Xuhuai Regional Institute of Agricultural Sciences, and Sweetpotato Research Institute of China Academy of Agricultural Sciences – is dedicated to improving sweetpotato varieties and industrialization. The year 2010 marks XAAS’s 100th anniversary. In time for this seminal centennial, XAAS is joining with the International Potato Center (CIP) to organize the China Xuzhou 4th International Sweetpotato Symposium. The goal of the meeting is to bring together experts from all over the world to discuss advances and potential in sweetpotato research, production, and processing.
The theme of the symposium is “Sweetpotato: Security of Food and Energy.” It follows three previous international sweetpotato meetings held in the past in Xuzhou. Joined with the symposium will be the 4th China-Japan-Korea Workshop, which will build on numerous communications and contacts with Japanese and Korean scientists, spearheaded by XAAS’s Chief Scientist, Professor Daifu Ma. |
Background on the Co-Sponsors
| |
XAAS presides over and coordinates the National Key Projects and International Cooperation and Communication programs in sweetpotato research in China. It is involved in developing the National Sweetpotato Industrialization System. It also is the supporting unit of the National Sweetpotato Improvement Centre and the National Sweetpotato Industrialization Research & Development Centre. XAAS works closely with CIP; countries such as Japan, USA, Korea; and regional institutes within China. It has organized many international and domestic workshops.
CIP is a research-for-development organization with a focus on potato, sweetpotato, and Andean roots and tubers to address food security and well-being for poor people in developing countries. Founded in 1971, CIP is headquartered in Lima, Peru, with offices and programs in more than 30 countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. CIP has collaborated with China for three decades to conduct research, promote innovation in science and technology, and enhance training and capacity in potato and sweetpotato farming and food systems. |
