There are two main types of post-graduate research fellowships or awards. They are for those who already hold professional qualifications and advanced degrees (usually doctorates) and who are conducting a CIP-related research project. However, please note that CIP does not provide any direct funding for professional research fellows. In fact CIP may itself be a funding applicant or co-applicant with a partner.
The first type of fellowship includes a number of institutionalized programs with special donor funding or annual awards competitions. For these CIP, as well as other CGIAR centers, is a partner in hosting or inviting fellows at CIP headquarters or sponsored by regional or field stations. CIP senior scientists develop and submit proposals to help CIP’s broader research programs through limited term research funding to support specialists working on specific topics. Examples of these programs in the past have been:
The second type of fellowships includes externally proposed or self-funded research opportunities for junior or senior scholars or career professionals with other international research institutes, governments or universities. CIP hosts these on a case by case basis, and welcomes suggestions for new fellowship research collaboration and professional partnerships on topics corresponding to CIP research program priorities. But these must be developed first in cooperation with CIP research leaders in headquarters or regions. Prospective fellows should have a clear (non-CIP) funding source in mind if they wish to discuss a potential proposal with CIP research leaders. Please consult the general CIP website www.cipotato.org for more information on CIP’s structure, research priorities and possible topics for future studies. External funding support could come from any private or public source. But some examples of potential types of research funding can be found in the booklet - Compendium of Scholarship and Fellowship Opportunities (World Fish Center, 2008).
