Funding or Sponsorships for Scholarships, Internships and Fellowships at CIP

  Versión Español »

Please note that the Capacity Strengthening Department (CSD) of CIP does not provide direct funding for any individual or group training programs, or for any scholarships, internships, or fellowships. Prospective applicants must arrange their own funding and sponsors. Although the CSD itself does not provide direct funding various CIP divisions or projects may provide modest financial support for a limited number of Peruvian and international students doing thesis-related CIP research. Applications (click) must be completed and submitted first to assess suitability.

The government of Peru, in particular, supports some funding programs for Peruvian nationals (see table with Spanish links below). Other governments, private foundations or foreign universities may also sponsor students or research projects conducted at CIP, based in Lima or at any of CIP’s regional or project offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America. But many of these are the result of various competitions with different application deadlines. Various Divisions or Programs of CIP may have limited funding available for specific projects from time to time. Prospective researchers or students are encouraged to consult the CIP website for more information on the types of research conducted by scientists from specific Divisions or Programs to see where their own research goals might fit.

If you already have a confirmed or prospective funding source, the CSD can assist you in making direct contact with the appropriate scientists at CIP to sponsor and develop a work program or prepare funding applications. Please contact us at CIP-CSD@cgiar.org if you require assistance. For additional information on some (not all) types of research funding sources see the booklet - Compendium of Scholarship and Fellowship Opportunities (World Fish Center, 2008).

All students or interns approved to conduct research at CIP will have a "Learning and Knowledge Sharing Contract” with the CSD and their supervisor. The agreement will require a seminar presentation and final report submitted as part of a work program supervised by a CIP scientist.

Types of Scholarships, Internships and Fellowships at CIP

Different placements at CIP may be self-funded or come from external sources but also must be supported by a CIP supervisor. These placements are of three general types.

Thesis Scholarships usually given to foreign and national students that have demonstrated high merits during their education. CIP provides the scholarship students with the materials and information they need to work on their undergraduate or graduate thesis. Student Internships given as short-period professional research work experiences of varied duration, supported either by the Peruvian government or an external sponsoring agency or personal funds, if a CIP scientist agrees to host the intern. Research Fellowships usually given to foreign post graduate scholars or professionals to support their own projects and research work at CIP with some reasonable living expenses. Within these general types there are various sub-categories according to the Peruvian law and the type of international funding support or project. These include five sub-categories of Peruvian and international placements as follows:

PERUVIAN

Peruvian Internships (“Pre-Professional” or "Professional practices” defined in Peruvian law) for Peruvian nationals. These are specially funded work-place learning experiences for Peruvian undergraduate students or recent graduates allowing them to gain practical (usually non-thesis related) professional skills and practical knowledge during or after finishing their bachelor’s degree.

Peruvian Undergraduate and Graduate Thesis Scholarships given to national students who have demonstrated high educational standing. CIP provides these scholarship students with material and basic support to complete their undergraduate or graduate thesis on a topic of interest to the student but also of special relevance for CIP. In some cases these students are provided a supplementary stipend for doing additional non-thesis research for CIP outside their normal studies.

INTERNATIONAL

International Graduate Student Thesis Research Placements non-paid (by CIP) research opportunities at CIP for international students to complete a thesis. These placements allow full or partial coverage of a foreign Masters or Ph.D. students’ tuition at a national university (within Peru) or support for some thesis-related field research at CIP to help complete a foreign degree. In some cases CIP may also provide partial or nominal stipends for part-time work on specific (usually non-thesis related) research projects.  However, none of these placements are considered full scholarships and will not necessarily cover all the student’s expenses at CIP.

International Youth and Student Internship Placements are for undergraduate or graduate students on research practicum, or recent graduates seeking to obtain short-term international project experience in their field of scholarly or professional expertise while working on a pre-arranged research project. Students may be registered in a foreign university and this could help fulfill their semester or year abroad requirements while based in Peru or at CIP office or field station in another country.  They are of varied duration according to the agreement. These internships are intended as non-paid (by CIP) work-place learning experience opportunities for youth. However, interns may be financially supported by an external sponsoring agency, special awards, or personal funds, if a CIP scientist agrees to host the intern.

International Research Fellowship Awards usually given to post-graduate (after completing a Ph.D. or professional degree) scholars to support their own proposed research projects with some reasonable living expenses. This type of research placement at CIP is conditional on availability of external support funds and the relevance of the applicant’s work to CIP’s objectives with support from a CIP supervisor.

For additional information on any these placements contact us at CIP-CSD@cgiar.org but also please review our Policies and Procedures as well as general information on CIP and its research programs first.
