Additional base map data (shapefiles) for all countries in the world can be downloaded for free from ArcData Online is ESRI's Internet Mapping and Data Site. The site contains a wide assortment of geographic information that users can access to create map images and download data.

More, comparable, country boundary data is available here (the International Taxonomic Database Working Group's world geographical scheme for recording plant distributions).

If you do not care about political boundaries, and want eco-regions instead, you can download the global ecoregions map (large shapefile) from the World Wildlife Fund.

Satellite images (LANDSAT false color) for nearly the world can be downloaded here. They are in the MrSid format that can be visualized in DIVA-GIS (note: they are in UTM projections, so you will need to project your shapefiles as well).

Another very good source global environmental data shapefiles and grids is UNEP Geo Data

SINGER: Genebank data from the International Agricultural Research Centres.

ECP/GR (European genebanks)
