On-line Tutorial
First download the example data (and put the files in the <DIVA dir>\tutor\ directory).1. The basicsThe below is a first attempt at an on-line tutorial for DIVA-GIS. Beware that this is not free of errors, or that changes may have occurred to the software. Either way, it is probably a good way to get started with DIVA. Good luck!
ð Install and start DIVA-GIS ð Click on Theme – Add ð Go to the directory: <DIVA dir>\tutor\peru o The Open Dialog appears ð Select the file: pe_departments.shp ð Click on Theme – Add again and select the file pe_wildpot.shp ð Click on the two checkboxes in the Legend. Your screen should now look like this (a map of Peru and locations where wild potatoes were observed):
ð Use the tools in the View menu or toolbar to zoom in and out, and to pan (move the center of a map that is not zoomed to its full extent. When you are ready, zoom to full extent. ð Double-click on the pe_departments theme in the legend.
The properties and symbol window appears. ð Change the Style to “SolidFill”, and the Fill Color to green, and click on OK. Now double-click on the pe_wildpot theme, and change the Style to “Circle”, the Fill Color to red and the Size to “4”. ð Use Save or Save As and save the current project in a directory of your choice. ð Use File–Close to close the project and then File–Open to open it again. ð
Make pe_departments
the active theme by clicking on it once. Then click on Theme–Identify (or
on the “i” symbol on the tool bar). After that, click on a part of the map
of Peru. The Identify window will appear, and show the data associated
with the object you clicked on. Now make pe_wildpot
the active theme and click on some points. If you click on (or near) more than
one points, these will all flash once, and the records of all these points will
be available in the Identify window. In the example below this is
indicated by “Rec 1 of 6”. You can inspect the different records using the
“up” and
“down” arrow at the right.
ð Make pe_wildpot the active theme and the whole database (of all objects on the map) by clicking on Theme–Table. You can highlight and pan and zoom to wards the selected object (select by clicking on a record in the table). ð If you only want to display a part of the data in a theme, you can use Theme–Variable. Make pe_wildpot the active theme and click on Theme–Variable and select the Field “Species”. Then click on Clear and click on the checkbox of “S. acaule Bitter”, and click on OK. The map now only shows the locations where Solanum acaule was observed. ð Make pe_wildpot the active theme and click on Theme–Copy and Theme–Paste. There are now two pe_wildpot themes in the legend. Change the Alias of the pe_wildpot theme (double click on its legend object) to “Solanum acaule”. Change the Alias of the new pe_wildpot to “All observations”, and change its properties to a blue circle of size 4. Drag its legend object to a position just above pe_departments and click on its checkbox to make it visible. Adjust the width of the legend to include all text, by moving your mouse on the border of the legend and the map until the cursor changes, and then drag the legend to the right. Your screen should now look like this:
ð Go to chapter 2. Data analysis and managing grids
