CIP's PapaCam

Welcome to PapaCam, where you can watch CIP scientists going about their business. We will be moving the camera around the Center's laboratories, greenhouses and fields, to show what is happening. To start off, we go inside the Biodiversity Complex, where CIP holds in trust over 5000 varieties of potato and 2500 varieties of sweetpotato.

Inside the Laboratory for In Vitro Sweetpotato Propagation

This view shows staff at work in the Laboratory for Sweetpotato Propagation. Here the old sweetpotato plantlets that have been conserved under slow growth conditions are renewed. The stem cuttings containing one to three buds are cut out and placed into new tubes on fresh conservation substrate that will nourish the growth of the cultures for another 2 years or more. After sealing and labeling, the tubes are then kept in the Growing Room for a few weeks to check that they are healthy and not contaminated. Finally, tubes are transferred to the Medium-term Storage Room where plantlets will be maintained for at least 2 years. Click here for more details.
