Research led by an international team of scientists in the high lands of Ecuador revealed that death and disease among those who are exposed to chemical pesticides is almost 20 times the previous estimates. The study also revealed that the dense highland soils are capable of absorbing great quantity of insecticides. CIP scientists now are trying to create tools to help establish policies that provide adequate levels of protection to the producers of potato and, at the same time, reduce environmental pollution and improve human health. For this purpose they are using a new tool: trade off analysis, which assesses the benefits and disadvantages of a particular approach or method.
