CIP is one of the four world centers selected to produce seeds that are being used to rebuild the devastated agricultural fields of Afghanistan. CIP produces varieties of potato adapted to the local conditions in the country. These are multiplied by Afghan farmers. This humanitarian assistance is sponsored by the Future Harvest Alliance for the Reconstruction of Afghanistan and it illustrates why it is so important to collect and to conserve the genetic diversity of the plants. Due to the war, the Afghanistan national collection of crops was lost, despite the fact that the scientists during the era Taliban hid the seeds in plastic holders, which themselves were plundered, not the seeds.
