From Cajamarca to the mountain places of the world: In the basins of La Encañada and Tambomayo, Cajamarca, a program for sustainable management of natural resources has shown more than one thousand families in extreme poverty how to confer added value to their various native products through processing, generating employment, income and new markets. This initiative will be easy to replicate in other mountain places of the world with similar characteristics.
Rescuing fragile ecosystems: Approximately 10 percent of the world’s population live in mountain ecosystems. Moreover, millions of people dwelling in the lower areas depend on these ecosystems for food and resources such as fresh water, commodities and energy. In addition, these areas are also important sources of plant and animal diversity, both in the wild and domestic states. The Global Mountain Program is promoting cooperation and information exchange among the Andes, the East and Central Highlands of Africa, and the Himalayas because the solutions to the problems of one region can be useful for others.
Improving life in the Andean high plains: Thousands of families that live in extreme poverty in the altiplano of Peru and Bolivia hope to improve their livelihoods through various strategies for the management and conservation of its natural resources, to achieve better production in order to reach food security and better incomes. With this purpose, a set of complementary agricultural activities have been identified in a new consortium of national and international entities lead by CIP: the Andean Agriculture in the Altiplano Project (ALTAGRO). With the financial support from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), this 5 year project will continue the works done in recent years by CIP and its partnerships in the Altiplano.
