A million hectares of potatoes in the developing world

Potato varieties bred with CIP materials or obtained with help from the center now occupy over 1 million hectares of land worldwide. This statistic comes from a survey of 23 national potato-breeding programs in developing countries in Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, which together account for more than 80% of developing country potato area and production.

New World Catalogue of Potato Varieties

The new 2009/10 edition of the "World Catalogue of Potato Varieties" is available. The Catalogue now contains more than 4500 potato varieties that are cultivated in over 100 countries world wide. The Catalogue also contains descriptions of about 1900 wild potato accesions from the wild potato collection maintained in the CIP genebank, in trust for the FAO International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.

The fastest spreading potato variety in China

Chinese farmers are rapidly adopting a CIP-developed potato variety that resists drought and gives much better yields than local varieties. CIP scientists developed the Tacna variety in 1993 and it was introduced into China in 1994 in the form of in vitro plantlets.

On Thursday, 11 December 2008, Professor Carlos Manuel Ochoa passed away. “The world has lost one of the pre-eminent scholars on potato taxonomy,” said CIP’s Director General Dr. Pamela Anderson. “Professor Ochoa was an invaluable member of CIP and will be greatly missed.”

Global Seed Vault in the Arctic will keep potatoes and sweet potatoes

Thousands of wild and cultivated varieties of potato and sweetpotato from the genetic bank the International Potato Center (CIP) keeps in trust in Lima, at the end of January will be sent to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault (SGSV) in Norway.  In this facility will also be stored other important food, forage and agroforestry crops from different parts of the world.

IRRI, a CGIAR center, ships 35.5 million seed to Svalbard Global Seed Vault - 24.8 MB (WMV)

CIP not damaged by major earthquake in Peru

A magnitude 8.0 earthquake struck Peru on Wednesday, 15 August 2007 at 6.41 p.m. local time (23H41 GMT). The earthquake lasted more than two minutes. The quake was centered in the sea about 105 miles south of Lima. More tremors followed: a magnitude 5.8 quake occurred at 7:02 p.m. and magnitude 5.9 occurred at 7:19 p.m. 387 deaths and over 1,500 injured have so far been reported south of Lima, in the Ica, Chincha, Pisco and Cañete areas.
