ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Alejandro Balaguer
An internationally known photographer born in Argentina, Balaguer is director and photo editor of the agency Biosfera. For the past 20 years his work has been distributed through the Associated Press, Corbis-Sygma, UNICEF and Rapho, and published in National Geographic, Geo, The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Miami Herald, The Independent, The Sunday Times, L’Express, Le Monde, Cambio 16 and El País, among others. Balaguer has lived in Peru for the past 17 years and is author of seven photographic books.
 
Fernando Cabieses
A Peruvian, Cabieses graduated from medical school in 1945, and specialized in neurological surgery in Philadelphia between 1945 and 1950. Since then he has practiced in Lima and is a pioneer in his specialty in South America. His parallel career has been biology (with a doctorate from Lima’s San Marcos University), specializing in economic botany. Cabieses currently chairs the National Institute of Traditional Medicine in Lima.
 
Lucien O. Chauvin
A US journalist with a master’s degree in international relations, Chauvin has worked for over ten years in Peru as a contributor to magazines and newspapers. He is editor of Contact Peru magazine, and a correspondent for the The Miami Herald and The Washington Post.
 
Luis Miguel Glave
An associate historian of the Peruvian Studies Institute and professor of post-graduate studies at San Marcos University in Lima, Glave holds a sociology degree and has been a visiting professor and researcher at several universities and institutions outside Peru. He has also served as the editor of a number of periodicals specializing in Andean issues, and is author of several books on Peruvian history and culture.
 
Christine Graves
The Senior Advisor to the Director General of the International Potato Center, Graves has lived in Peru off and on for almost 20 years, working as a producer of cultural events and a specialist in communication. From 1985 to 1993 she served as information officer for the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO, in Rome. She holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and a master’s degree in Latin American literature.
 
Luis G. Lumbreras
A Peruvian anthropologist, Lumbreras is professor emeritus of the Universities of San Marcos, Lima, and San Cristobal de Huamanga, Ayacucho. He specializes in pre-Hispanic archaeology, with an emphasis on the economic and social history of aboriginal cultures. He has taught at universities in Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Cuba, Spain, Germany, and Brazil. His books have been translated into several languages and he has contributed to a number of magazines and books.
 
Luis Millones
Millones holds a master’s degree in anthropology and a doctorate in history. He received Peru’s National Culture Fellowship, is a founding member of the Interdisciplinary Seminar of Andean Studies, Lima, a member of the Chilean Academy of History and a researcher with the National Ethnology Museum of Japan. Millones is also professor emeritus of the University of San Cristobal de Huamanga, Ayacucho and a visiting professor at several universities outside Peru. He is the author of numerous books and articles on the Andean world.
 
Carlos Ochoa
A Peruvian agronomist and taxonomist, Ochoa is scientist emeritus of the International Potato Center. He has discovered 80 wild species of potato and contributed to the formation of the largest potato genebank in the world. Ochoa has been awarded a number of international prizes, including the Bernardo Houssay Inter-American Science Prize of the Organization of American States in 1992.
 
Robert E. Rhoades
A professor of anthropology at the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia (USA), Rhoades worked at the International Potato Center from 1979 until 1991. Widely experienced in academic and applied anthropology, especially in the fields of agriculture and natural resources, Rhoades has written numerous articles for National Geographic Magazine. In 1991 he received the US National Science Writers Award.
 
Monkombu S. Swaminathan
A former director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research and of the International Rice Research Institute, Swaminathan is also a former independent chairman of the FAO Council and of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. He is a member of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences of India, of the Royal Society of London, and of the US National Academy of Sciences. In 1987 he received the World Food Prize for his work in crop genetics and sustainable agricultural development in India and the Third World. He has also received the UNEP Sasakawa award (1994), the UNESCO Ghandi Gold Medal (1999), and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Medal (2000).
 
Walter H. Wust
A Peruvian forestry engineer, editor and photographer, Wust is also an environmental analyst and one of Peru’s most experienced field naturalists. His travels around the country have provided him with extensive knowledge of the territory. He has published 12 books and written over 500 articles for magazines in Peru and abroad.
 
Hubert G. Zandstra
The Director General of the International Potato Center since 1991, Zandstra has extensive experience in international agricultural research and development. He served as Deputy Director General for Research at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines, and as Director of the Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Sciences Division of the International Development and Research Center in Canada. Zandstra specialized in agronomy at McGill University, Montreal, and later earned a doctorate at Cornell University, USA.
