Getting Agriculture on the City Agenda

The year 2004 ended on a positive note for agriculture in the city of Lima when a Declaration was signed by NGOs, municipalities and research centers to strengthen the integration of urban agriculture in their policies and programs.  All partners came together to discuss the importance of urban agriculture in city planning.  The Declaration signing, on December 14, was preceded by an international conference during which experiences promoting urban and peri-urban agriculture in municipalities in Lima and other cities of Latin America were exchanged.  A diverse number of participants including mayors, municipal representatives, NGOs, local agriculturalists, and researchers coming from Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Peru attended.  The goal was to pool experiences and knowledge on the development of urban and peri-urban agriculture and its contribution to reducing hunger, poverty and environmental degradation in Latin American cities and increasing human health, and family income.

The conference confirmed the importance of a constant flow of information between the different stakeholders and the way this strengthens and empowers people to introduce changes.
