Harvest-SSA Coordination -- the first six months

Urban Harvest PROJECTS
Yaounde
The project started in February / March and some of
the activities were included in a Wren Media package
based on interviews in late March. The first visit
by the Regional Coordinator is scheduled for October
2002.
The project, led by Jim Gockowski and Christian
Nolte of IITA, has the following components:
1. Livelihood strategies (IITA/CIRAD/CRBP)
2. Nutrition and perishables (IITA/CIRAD/ISSEA)
3. Crop-livestock integration (IITA/IRAD)
4. Off-season vegetables (IITA/IRAD)
5. Fruit tree seedlings (ICRAF/IRAD)
6. Environmental effects of UPA (IITA/ICLARM/ENPS)
7. Institutional and policy aspects
(INC/Municipality)
8. Workshop (All/CIRAD)
Two
members of the team attended the Workshop on Urban
Policy Implications of Enhancing Food Security in
African Cities organized by UN Habitat, FAO, IDRC
and Urban Harvest, 27 - 31 May in Nairobi, Kenya.
Luis Awono of the Communaute Urbaine De Yaounde and
Athanase Bopda of INC (National Institute of
Cartography) They presented a paper on planning and
development aspects of urban and peri-urban
agriculture, including a historical and spatial
analysis.
Kampala
After incorporation of comments from the Urban
Harvest Steering Committee, the project, titled
Strengthening Urban Agriculture in Kampala, Uganda,
was approved in May with the following components:
1. Livelihoods and production systems in UPA in
Kampala (CIP/CIAT/MISR)
2. Market opportunities for urban farmers (CIAT/IITA/Foodnet/COMFARNET)
3. Technical interventions to support UPA (NARO/MakerereU/Env.Alert/Plan
Int.)
It is led by Soniia David of CIAT. Margaret Azuba of
Kampala City Council and Richard Miiro of Makerere
act as deputy team leaders.
A start-up planning meeting was held 22-23 May 2002
to outline the methodology and timetable. Sites will
be selected by end of August and a Participatory
Urban Appraisal (PUA) held in each site in October,
with in-depth surveys in November and February (wet
and dry seasons). Selection of schools for the
Technical Interventions component was ongoing in
July. A library of resource materials was
established by CIP Uganda staff Dr. Regina Kapinga
and Mr. Silver Tumwegamire in the CIP office in
Kampala, and an annotated bibliography is in
preparation. Dr. Soniia David organized interviews
for a Wren Media package on the project in early
July.
Two members of the research team attended the
Workshop on Urban Policy Implications of Enhancing
Food Security in African Cities organized by UN
Habitat, FAO, IDRC and Urban Harvest, 27 - 31 May in
Nairobi, Kenya. Margaret Azuba of KCC presented a
paper on The Magnitude of Urban Food Poverty in
Kampala, Uganda, and John Muwanga Musisi of the
Ministry of Agriculture presented a paper on The
Role of Rural-to-Urban Food Inflows: the Case of
Nakawa Division, Kampala City.
