Participatory Research and Development on Urban
Agriculture and Livestock Keeping

On
December 14, 2004, a preparatory stakeholders
meeting was held in Nukuru to discuss an initiative
on urban agriculture and livestock keeping. The initiative aims to further develop
Urban Agriculture and Livestock keeping Research and
Development Center (UA & RD Center) already
established next to the Gioto dumpsite in London
Estate, in Nakurur. This proposal aims to help
Nakuru urban farmers and livestock keepers to
improve their livelihoods and contribute to urban
security. This initiative will be undertaken
in 2005 by Urban Harvest, Kenya Green Towns
Partnership Association, a Kenyan NGO, the Municipal
Council of Nakuru and the University of Nairobi
(Department of Soil Science).
The purpose of the meeting
was to develop a common understanding of the
initiative amongst the interest groups, regarding
the collaborators, its purpose and intended
beneficiaries. Further, to seek endorsement of the
initiative in terms of its relevance to, and
ownership by, the affected community to ensure that
it is demand-led.
