Spanish
funding for new Urban Harvest Project in Lima
In Lima,
Peru, a pre-feasibility study in 2002 identified the
shantytown and agricultural areas of the Eastern
Cone as the research site for strengthening the role
of agriculture in alleviating urban poverty. Based
on this a subsequent project proposal was developed
which addresses peri-urban animal and crop
production aspects, marketing concerns and
environment issues, together with a focus on urban
livelihoods and strengthening of local institutions
(municipalities and local farmer groups). The
project will also continue on-going nutrition
research on the use of local crops as components of
weaning foods for infants from 6 months to 3 years.
This project proposal was submitted for funding to
INIA Spain (National Institute of Agricultural
Research), and was approved in late 2003. For more
