Inauguration of the Urban Harvest Office
in Huachipa, Lima
March
22, 2005
Urban
Harvest’s “Farmers in the City” project has
been working in Lima for a year now. The site
location is in the lower watershed of the Rimac
River, in the district of Lurigancho-Chosica.
This district is situated in the low-income
eastern zone of Lima.
Before the Agrarian Reform of the1969, the
eastern zone was comprised of large agricultural
‘haciendas’, estates.
With the break up of the haciendas the
district became one of the most dynamic areas of
intensive horticultural products. Farms supply as
much as 70% of some key vegetables in Lima.
However, urbanization continues to transform
the city especially through the loss of agricultural
land. A
major cause has been the lack of agricultural needs
in municipal planning. Through collaboration
with the municipality and Urban Harvest a first step
has been achieved in obtaining an agricultural
office in on of the municipalities, CP Santa Maria
Huachipa, in the Lurigancho-Chosica. The office will
be crucial in promoting urban agriculture in city
planning and ensuring its sustainability. It will
provide physical presence, which enables the
municipality, Urban Harvest and their partners to be
in closer proximity to the project site and the
producers.
Hugo Garavito, President of the Commission for City
Services and the Environment (Comisión de Servicios
a la Cuidad y Medio Ambiente) will inaugurate the
office while local partners, producers, and city
officials will attend the important event.
