An Agricultural Coordination Office in the City
March 22, 2005
Uncontrolled urban growth is one of the main
hindrances to urban agriculture. One of the
municipalities working with Urban Harvest in
Lima has taken a step forward by passing ordinance to
recognize its interest in urban agriculture and to
formally incorporate agriculture into its
organizational structure. On March, 22, 2005
the Mayor of the Sub-District Municipality of C.P
Santa Maria of Huachipa Municipality inaugurated an
Office of Urban Agriculture Coordination that will
be crucial in promoting urban agriculture in city
planning and ensuring its sustainability. It
will provide a space for all the partners to
utilize; gather and hold meetings; be in closer
proximity to the project site and producers; and
a space where the municipality can be more involved
with Urban Harvest and partners in urban
agricultural activities. The Coordinator of
Urban Agriculture for the Municipality of C.P Santa
Maria of Huachipa, Gustavo Flores, stated that the
office will help to 'defend the agriculturalist and
make the area be profitable.'
The
mayor, Maria Angelica Fonseca and Urban Harvest
Global Coordinator, Gordon Prain, celebrated the
inauguration together as a step in building strong
collaboration between the Municipality, UH and
partners.
One
day prior to the inauguration the municipality
passed an Ordinance, which declares the
municipalities general interest in urban agriculture
and the agreement to integrate urban agriculture in
the municipality. With the opening of the
Agricultural Coordination Office and the city
ordinance, it is hoped that urban
agriculture will have a sustainable future in
Huachipa.
