Second
inter-institutional conference on the contribution
of urban agriculture to the sustainable development
of city municipalities
Lima,
Peru
On
December 14, 2004, Urban Harvest held a second
conference promoting urban and peri-urban
agriculture as a key element in the sustainable
development of municipalities in the Eastern,
Northern and Southern shantytowns of Lima.
Participants who attended the meeting came
from Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Spain and Peru and
included mayors, municipal representatives, NGO
staff, local producers and researchers from
universities and national research institutes. The
goal was to exchange experiences and knowledge
amongst this diverse range of participants on the
development of agriculture in and around Latin
American cities, with the aim of fighting hunger,
poverty and environmental degradation and
contributing to human health and family income. The
objectives were:
1. Evaluate the advances made by agricultural producers in
the eastern and southern districts of Lima
2. Evaluate the advances made in relation to the
integration of urban and peri-urban agriculture
within the municipalities of these districts
3. Exchange experience and knowledge about urban and peri-urban
agricultural programs in other cities in Latin
America and the Caribbean
4. Stimulate awareness among
interested institutions about the important role
that agriculture can play in the development of
urban areas.
The
conference generated a great deal of enthusiasm and
stimulated a significant exchange of experiences
among participants. Following presentations,
comments and questions, the meeting concluded with
the signing of the Declaration, which aims to
strengthen the integration of urban agriculture in
urban management, through policies and programs of
national and local governments, research centers and
NGOs.
